SUMMER YOUTH ADVENTURE
PROGRAMS
***Little Explorers-Hand in Hand in Nature
Ages 4-5      Fee:  $15.00   
June 8, 9 & 10 -  9:30 AM- 11:30 AM
David Stokes is a father, educator, naturalist and entertainer
who has performed throughout the United States and Canada.  
This class is especially designed for a parent/grandparent to spend “quality
time” in nature with their 4 or 5 year old child.  Each day our adventure will
begin inside and then head outdoors to explore.  Please dress for the weather
and bring insect repellent.  Don’t apply the repellent until you need it.  Parents
may also want to bring a camera for “Kodak” moments.  Space will be limited to
12preschoolers and their parent/grandparent/adult/guardian.

           ***Nature Detectives  Ages 6-7   Fee: $15.00    
                   June 8, 9 & 10 -  1:30 PM to 3:30 PM
                   Everything is the same as in the description above except                  
parents are welcome, but not required and the “detective” activities will be age
appropriate for 6 to 7 year old children.  Space will be limited to 12 participants.

***Zumbro River and Zollman Zoo Youth Canoe Trip:
June 14 and 15 Ages: 12- 14  Fee:  $20.00 -
Scholarship is available
Leaders are Larry Dolphin and Ryan Leveque
June 14 - Canoe practice 1:00-3:00 PM
June 15 - Canoe the Zumbro River- 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM
Canoe the Zumbro River and visit the critters who make their homes at the
Zollman Zoo!  Please bring your own lunch on June 15th.  Space is limited to 9
participants and full scholarships are available.  

***Junior Ranger Rick  Ages: 6-7  Fee: $15.00

Session 2 -  June 24 and 25  1:30 - 3:30 PM
Come join us as we explore the secret traces that animals leave behind in
nature. Space is limited to 10 participants per session.

***Canoeing the Root River and Exploring the  
Blufflands:  
Ages 11-12
Fee:  $100.00  (1/2 fee scholarships are available)
Leaders are Larry Dolphin, Ryan Leveque and a female leader

JUNE 28- 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM Canoe practice on Dobbins Creek to East Side Lake
at the Nature Center
JUNE 29- Depart at 8:00 AM and explore the Mystery Caves.  After lunch at
Forestville State Park we will travel to the Eagle Bluff Environmental Center
and get settled in for our overnight stay.  In the afternoon we will challenge
the high ropes and enjoy dinner and an evening program at the center.  Please
bring your own lunch on June 29.  
JUNE 30  Enjoy breakfast at Eagle Bluff and canoe an eight mile stretch of the
Root River.  We will return to the Nature Center by 4:30 PM.  Fee includes
lodging, admission fees for Forestville State Park, Mystery Cave, canoes,
lifejackets, paddles, high rope challenge course, three meals-dinner on June 29
and breakfast and lunch on June 30.  Space is limited to
9 participants and 1/2 fee scholarships are available.





***Heritage Survival Class-
Ages 10-11  Fee: $60.00  (1/2 fee scholarships are available)(4 day class) July 6, 7
8    9:00 AM- noon  AND July 9- 9:00 AM-1:00 PM                    
Participants will learn to flintknapp, make arrowheads and throw the atl atl
with Dan Block.  Ole Oleson, will be here to share stories of Norwegian
immigrants.  Native American Stories will be shared.  Participants will make
candles, build fires, make their own lunch over an open fire, play old time games
and learn about the first people with Native American stories.  Space is limited
to 16  participants and 1/2 fee scholarships are available.

Come join us as we explore ways to tell what animals live at the nature center
from the clues they leave behind. Space is limited to 10 participants per session.

***Radical Raptors  
Ages 9, 10 & 11   Fee:  $40.00   (Full scholarships available)
July 26 - 1:00-3:00 PM  Hawk talk, games and competition
July 26 - 8:30 PM  Family/Participant Owl Talk and Calling
Program at the Nature Center.
July 28- 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM  Day trip to Whitewater State
Park and the National Bald Eagle Center in Wabasha, MN.
We will meet the four Eagle education birds, Columbia,
Harriet, Angel and Donald the Golden Eagle that reside
at the center.  Using our sight and binoculars we will identify birds of prey as
we travel to Whitewater State Park and the new National Bald Eagle Center.  
Please bring your own lunch on July 28.  Space is limited to 12 participants and
full scholarships are available.

***Monarch Magic:  
Ages 8, 9 & 10   Fee: $10.00
Class  1 - July 27      1:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Class  2- August 3   1:00 PM- 3:30 PM
This class will capture the mystery and resilience of the Monarch from egg to
migration. Activities will include finding caterpillars to raise for tagging and
release.  Space is limited to 10 participants.  

***Shell Rock River Youth Canoe, and Fossil Trip:
Ages 12 - 14  Fee:  $20.00     Full Scholarships are available
August 3 - Canoe Practice 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
August 4 - Canoe and Fossil Trip - 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Enjoy canoeing and collecting fossils in Rockford, Iowa.  Please bring your own
lunch on August 4. Space is limited to 9 participants and full scholarships are
available.

***Monarch Tagging:  Ages 10, 11 & 12   Fee: $10.00
Class  1 - August   17   1:00 - 3:00 PM      
Class  2 - August   18   1:00 - 3:00 PM  
Class  3 - August   24  1:00 - 3:00 PM       
Monarchs born after August 15 in this latitude are
generally considered migratory.  The Nature Center
will have tags to tag the individual Monarchs.
Students in this class will be certified to sign out tags.


                      2010 SUMMER ADVENTURE SCHOLARSHIPS
    Full Scholarships are available for the Zumbro-Zollman Zoo River Canoe Trip in June,
the Shell Rock -Fossil Canoe trip in August and the Radical Raptor Class.  1/2 fee
scholarships are available for Canoeing the Root River-Exploring the Blufflands trip
and Heritage Survival Class.  To receive a scholarship, a  student must write three to
five complete sentences as to why they want to attend a specific summer adventure
class.  Please submit to the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center by June 3. Please include the
following information:  name, address, city/state, zip code, phone number and age.   
The scholarships will be offered on a first come, first serve basis.  Please submit your
request and paragraph to Larry Dolphin, Julie Champlin or Ryan Leveque at the visitor
center.  You can mail your request to the Nature Center at P.O. Box 673, Austin,
Minnesota 55912.  If you have any questionsplease call 437-7519.   We gave out 41
scholarships to area children in 2009!

    The 2010 scholarships are donated by Austin Audubon, Austin Izaak Walton League ,
Mable Hjelmen, Beverly Smith-in honor of Dick Smaby and Terry Dorsey,
and the Friends of the Hormel Nature Center.  Thank you donors!
